Staving off bank runs

The FDIC ran a full-color, full-page ad in the A section of the WashPost today. (The same section running a series explaining the credit crisis.) The ad boasts that no one has ever lost a penny since the FDIC has been insuring deposits up to $100,000. (Ad translation: "Please don't do a run on the banks!")

Meanwhile, according to a colleague who follows these things closely, the FDIC has quadrupled its staff for handling bank failures.
